In the nineties, one of the most serious problems of the Borsod region was the professional placement of the generated communal waste, and the forming of a modern waste management system according to today’s environmental regulations. Within the framework of the EU’s ISPA program and the co-operation of 37 settlements, on the outskirts of Hejőpapi village, a new, modern waste management plant was built. The old site at Bogáncs Street, Miskolc was closed on 1st of June, 2006, and by now it has become the biggest recultivated communal waste dumping site in Hungary. In the covered dumping site waste pile gases are arisen due to the decompostation of substances. To obtain these gases in the 22 hectare site 84 wells were dug, and to help the production, MIHŐ Ltd. invested to dig other 64 wells.

In 2008, MIHŐ Ltd. (Member Company of Miskolc Holding Plc.) won a 196 million HUF subsidy for the 500 million HUF investment, given by the New Hungary Development Plan - Environmental Protection and Energy Operative Program („Új Magyarország Fejlesztési Terv Környezetvédelem és Energia Operatív program”).

In the first phase of the project, a 250 m long pipeline network was built between the boiler houses of Bogáncs and Futó Street, and a new, waste pile gas utilizing boiler was installed.

In year 2009, 600 000 m3 gas was obtained, out of this 550 000 m3 was used in heating by MIHŐ.

The second phase of the project will be the extension of the network with a generator capable of producing both electricity and thermal energy. The construction works have been finished in April.

According to the financial data of the first phase, the total cost of the investment will be reimbursed within three years. Changing to the waste pile gas utilizing network will result in 50-60 million HUF extra revenue for the company, and decreases the carbon – dioxide output with 3900 tons.

Through this project, MIHŐ Ltd. and the city of Miskolc took a large step towards harnessing the available alternative energy sources in the interest of decreasing pollution in the area.
